Let’s face it. If your ad doesn’t stop them on the page, don’t advertise.
You’re throwing money away. Here’s how to get them to stop, look and listen.
First. Know your audience and message. Who are you talking to - Moms, Dads, Carpenters, Software Engineers – and what do you want to tell them.
Second. What is the goal of your ad? Do you want them to call, go to a website, send in a coupon, visit? Be precise about what you want them to do.
Third. Make it visually interesting. Use plenty of white space to set yourself apart from the rest of the clutter on the page. Create a headline that stops them. Try using unusual words, numbers or questions in a headline. Anything to make them want to read more.
Example (pictured left):
Audience: People with Bad Breath
Product: Mouthwash
Action: Go to website and order.
The headline grabs your attention with interesting words and whitespace.
The body copy tells them what the product is, it’s function and how to get it.
It’s a little gross too. But hey – Made you look!
